KILLED IN ACTION

Well-known U.S. War Correspondent (7.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 18. The well-known war correspondent. Ernie Pyle, has been killed in action. Pyle was killed by a Japanese machinegun on a little island off Okinawa. His death became known when President Truman issued a message of condolence. President Truman said: “Tire nation is quickly saddened again by the death of Ernie Pyle. No man in this war has so well told the story of the American fighting man. He became the spokesman of the ordinary American in arms, who is doing so many extraordinary things. It was due to his genius that the mass and power of our military and naval forces never obscured the men who made them. All Americans understand now how wisely and how warm-heartedly he served his country."
