Substantial Gains (8.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON. April 18. American troops on leshima to-day made substantial gains in the northeastern area of the island, says Admiral Chester Nimitz in a communique. The enemy in the legusugu Lake area resisted stiffly from dug in positions and pillboxes. Preliminary reports show that in three days 388 of the enemy were killed and one was taken prisoner. Our forces lost 15 killed, 73 wounded and five missing. Marines reached the northern end of Okinawa Island and on the Motobu Peninsula continued operations against isolated enemy groups. The lines have not changed in the southern sector. Naval guns and carrier-aircraft continued to attack enemy strongpoints. A total of 989 American naval personnel were killed in the Okinawa operation and associated attacks against Japan. 2220 were injured and 491 are missing. Tenth Army soldiers and Marines lost 478 killed, 2457 wound and 260 missing.
