UNUSUAL ACCIDENT

Public Works Employee Killed (N.Z.P.A.) NELSON, April 19. In an unusual accident Alfred Robert Strahl, aged 25, single, an employee of the Public Works Department, was killed by a trailer which broke loose from a truck on the Annesbrook overhead bridge. His parents reside in Kaikoura. Two women in a parked car had a narrow escape. A motor lorry was towing a trailer with a bulldozer on it. When nearing the top of the Annesbrook incline the bolt coupling the drawbar on the truck apparently snapped and the trailer earning the bulldozer started off down the incline. Strahl. who was sitting in the cabin of the truck, dashed off in pursuit of the trailer with the object of applying the separate brake in the trailer. He was observed to attempt to jump on |he trailer but apparently slipped and was struck and killed. The car containing the two women had pulled up at the foot of the incline to allow the truck and the trailer to pass, and the terrified occupants saw the heavily laden trailer charging toward them. Just in time the trailer swung round and careered into a paddock, where it came to a stop.
