Caledonian Grounds Thronged Athletics And Cycling In spite of a cold day, a grey skv and threatening rain, the Caledonian Grounds at Timaru were thronged on Saturday when a combined athletics and cycling meeting was conducted by the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Cldb and the Timaru Cash Cycling Club. It was one of the most successful fixtures held in Timaru for many years—there were more than 350 entries—and it provided a just reward for the enthusiasm and work of the officials of the two clubs who organised it. Throughout the day selections were played by' the Timaru Highland Pipe Band. The first event started at 11 a.m. and the programme was completed shortly before 5 p.m. A contingent of athletes and cyclists from the .-ur Force station at Wigram contrinuted in no small measure to the keenness of the competition in all events, while a visiting team of young men and women from Greymoutn lent added interest to the athletic events. Athletes were also present from Christchurcn, Ashburton, Temuka and Dunedin, together with a large representation of the Timaru clubs. In Doth the athletics and cycling some of the oest performers m the Dominion competed. In the cycling, the two top trackmen in New Zealand to-day, R. H. Knight and H. J. Smither, fought out some inrilling finishes. The meeting was abiy controlled, Mr L. G. Williams supervising the athletics and Mr S. F. Hansen the cycling. Mr A. Loach proved an ideal and informative announcer, and Mr A. r. Paterson expeditiously compiled the results. Mr J. C. Davey was tne scarcer for an events. The president of the South Canterbury Athletic Club (Mr C. W. Cameron) thanxeu all the officials toi their efficient services and thanked the public lor their support of the fixture. Ihe president of tne Cycling Club (Mr G. Jackson) also thanked the puolic for their support. Flying Officer H. H. McKay, sports officer at the Air Station, Wigram, said the meeting was an excellent one in all respects and the team of Air Force athletes and cyclists had thoroughly enjoyed their visit. Meetings of this kind attracted the cream of the Dominion’s talent. The meeting was conducted in the right spirit and the result was a high degree of good will among the competitors. The Air Force athletes would look forward to their next visit to Timaru. It was the best day that his team had had away from home, said Mr I. E. steel, the manager of the team from Greymouth. He admired the Caledonian Grounds and hoped that some day such an excellent area and track would be established on the West Coast. The experience gained and friendships made during such visits had a lifelong value, he said. Next Easter he hoped to be back at Timaru for the sports again. During the afternoon, H. J. Smither attempted to lower the New Zealand unpaced cycling record of 29 4-5 seconds for tne quarter mile. Conditions did not favour the attempt but Smither covered the lap in 31 1-5 seconds. R. H. Knight was to have attempted this record but he was not in top form. Smither won the two-mile South Canterbury Cycling Championship which was held at the meeting and he was presented with the blue ribbon by the president of the cycling club (Mr Jackson >. There were three smashes in the last event of the day—the three miles miss-and-out cycling event. On the completion of each lap the last rider of the bunch was obliged to retire from the race. Entering the straight at the northern end of the ground, the Ashburton rider, C. Gluestein, hit the rails and had to be taken to the Timaru Public Hospital in the St. John Ambulance. He suffered concussion and laceration of the head.
