Corporal L. E. Hayhurst
Cpl. Laurence Edward Hayhurst, who was recently reported killed in action, was born at Timaru on October 25, 1920, and was the son of Mrs Hayhurst and the late Mr Theodore Hayhurst. He
was educated at the Timaru West and Boys’ High Schools, being a prefect of the latter in 1938. When he left school he joined the Public Service, and was serving in the Labour Department when he joined the Army. He was a keen angler and his spare week-ends were spent out at the river. He played football for Old Boys.
Private G. J. Paterson Private Gordon James Paterson, who was killed in action in Italy on December 24, 1944, was the husband of Mrs B. R. Paterson, 346 Talbot Street, Geraldine, and the younger son of Mr and Mrs T. J. Paterson, of Dunedin.
Born at Geraldine on October 10, 1916, Private Paterson was educated at the Geraldine District High School, and took a keen interest in swimming and football. At the time he entered the Armed Forces he was employed as a surveyor by the Public Works Department, Westerfield.
