Pilot Officer L. Williams

Pilot Officer Leslie Williams, who was reported missing on February 17, 1944. and now presumed dead, was the son of Mr and Mrs E. J. Williams, 35 Opie Street, Waimate. He was born in Timaru on October 30, 1922, and went to Waimate with his parents in 1924 and to Kaikoura in 1931. He was

educated at the Waimate and Kaikoura District Schools and the Christchurch Technical College. He joined the Post and Telegraph service in 1938, serving in Wellington, Christchurch, Rangiora, Waikarl and Kaikoura before enlisting and seeing active service in England, Gibraltar and the Middle East. He obtained his commission at the age of 21 in Africa, and at the time of being posted missing was attached to a Fighter Squadron in Italy. He toured Africa with Mr Churchill in 1943 as one of the escort party. W.0.11 M. Tavener W.0.11 Morris Tavener, died of wounds, was born on October 1, 1917, at Rakaia, being the elder son of Mrs E. A. Charles, Orari Bridge, and the late Mr W. Tavener, of Chertsey. He

was educated at the Arundel School and the Timaru Boys’ High School and then worked on the farm of the late Mr J. T. Charles, Orari Bridge. He was the secretary of the Arundel Miniature Rifle Club and was a good shot himself. In 1940 he married Miss Winifred Davie, of Waimate. Two years later he entered the Armed Forces and died of wounds in Italy on December 24, 1944. He leaves a widow and one son.
