RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Mr P. E. Brennan, of Paeroa, died last week. He was the owner of Kentish, Cornish and Yorkish, three well-known Auckland gallopers. The brood mare Salford (served by Lo Zingaro) was bought by Mr J. E. P. Cameron for 230gns. Provision had to be made for three divisions in the Hinuera Handicap at Matamata, and for two in the Railway Hack, Putaruru Stakes and Okoroire Hack Cup. There is thus a possibility of 13 races, and a probability of 11. Mr S. J. Newlands, owner of Gigli, outbid all opposition for the colt’s half-brother by Foxbridge, going to 1500gns. to secure him. Mr J. T. Cheesman, owner of Bridge Acre and Al-Sirat, was not a bidder for their full brother.

A change of riders did not do much for Glenfalloch. He was closer up in the early stages of the Patriotic Handicap, but no nearer the front at the finish. His New Zealand Cup run has been his best for the season. Vafort gave further evidence of stamina by racing from last to first to win the Kaitoke Hack at Trentham. His two successes have netted nearly £BOO, so that he has earned his way out of the hack class. The field he beat was a moderate one, but the Broiefort gelding should have a reasonable chance in provincial middledistance handicaps. Typhoon’s 2.291 in the Patriotic Handicap at Trentham will go on the books as a Dominion record, replacing the figures of Argentic and Lou Rosa 2.30. Many years ago Compris was credited with 2.29 at Trentham, but this and other records were expunged from the records on it being discovered that distances had been inaccurate. The Auckland contingent failed completely at the Wellington meeting. Its numbers were negligible on the third day, but on the two preceding days many of the North’s best horses were competing, and it was extraordinary that not one of them secured a place. The left-handed going was strange to most of them, and possibly “hey were feeling the effects of the summer racing at Ellerslie. Another explanation may be that Auckland form was over-estimated, and that they were weighted in excess of their capabilities. Although confirmation cannot be obtained, it is reported in Wellington that the brother to Bridge Acre and Al-Sirat purchased last week at the record figure of 3000gns. was bought on behalf of Bing Crosby, the wellknown American crooner. Meanwhile the colt has gone north to A. Winder’s stable at Te Rapa. During his career Lambourn has paid some large dividends, both win and place. His first win was registered in the Hopeful Stakes at Wellington, in which he was 6/7 in a field of 10. At three years he scored in the Te Mahanga Handicap at Hastings when 9/10 in the betting and returned a win dividend of over £3O. As a five-year-old he paid a nice place dividend when he finished second to Classform in the Woodville Handicap. In his sixth year Lambourn won the Pahiatua Cup and paid over £3O, while this season he won the Waiohiki Stakes and paid over two score. In the Wellington Cup his dividend exceeded a century. Lambourn has contested 53 races for nine wins and 13 minor placings. and his winnings total £6172, of which £3425 has been credited to Mr J. T. Bridgman who bought him four months ago. Until the Foxbridge-Ann Acre colt made 3000gn§. last week, the record price for the National sales was 2400gns. paid for Zetes (Limond-Waterwings), a brother to Agrion. and for Oratorian (Hunting Song - Oratress). Neither proved to be of any account. Limond Lad (Limond-Veil), a brother to Vellmond, who realised 2100gns, was only moderately successful in South Australia. Murmuring (Bulandshar-Tea Tattle), 2Qoogns„ has won only one race in Melbourne. Anstey (FoxbridgeAdministration), half-brother to Lord Chancellor, also is in Melbourne, but is only two-years-old, and may yet distinguish himself and return the 2000gns. he cost. Honour (LimondHomage), who brought 2300gn5., won a Welcome and a Derby for Mr G. D. Greenwood, and so far has been the most successful of the Dominion's highest-priced yearlings.
