RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Manawatu Cup to-day. As a result of his failure to finish further forward than fourth at Te Awamutu, Reorapa has receded in favour for the Railway Handicap. He missed the jump-out and instead of holding his usual place at the head of the field he got the worst of the running. After hearing evidence in an appeal by Mr B. N. Sandilands, stipendiary steward, against the decision of the judicial committee of the Rangitikei Racing Club in merely cautioning C. A. Bowry after an incident in the Sandon Hack Hurdles at Bulls on December 2, the Wanganui District Committee reversed the decision and suspended Bowry for one month for careless riding, causing interference. Bowi? will have to miss the holiday meetings. Master Ted has won nearly £l2OO in stakes, but most of it was collected for seconds in three Guineas races and he is still a hack. Te Hinemoa, favourite for the Auckland Cup, was beaten in the Queen’s Plate (for hacks) last Boxing Day. The Plate winner was Foxwyn, who ran Expanse to a head in the Derby. The hottest favourite at Ashburton will be the Blue Horizon-Will Cary bracket. Another short price will have to be accepted about Emulous. The brother to Lightning Lady won the Challenge Stakes at Addington like a good horse. Don Quex, who went amiss on the eve of the New Zealand Cup meeting, is expected to resume racing in the Marton Cup at New Year. Sleepy Fox, who has 10.2 in the Railway Handicap, is tackling a task which has never been accomplished—to win the big sprint with 10.0 or more. The Quite Sure trotter Quartermaster has not raced since his impressive victory at Forbury, but he will be a competitor in the opening event at Ashburton and from 36 behind should pay a dividend.

Firewater has been discussed as a likely winner in the loose class trots at Ashburton, but she is giving away 60 yards to start. Cockney was placed second to Forewarned in a tight finish at Epsom on Labour Day—so tight that his supporters claimed he had won. He is in fine order for next week’s meeting, and has shown capacity to race right-handed. Although Royal Slipper remains in the Great Northern Foal Stakes it is not certain that the Paper Slipper filly will run. W. Clifden has another representative in Balmacara, a longstriding gelding who was a winner at his only start. The Te Rapa trainer, M. Stewart, has no representative in the Auckland Trotting. Cup. He may have a drive in the race behind Volo Senwood if Hilda Potts gets to the post. Among the acceptors for the Nursery Handicap at Ellerslie is Bjonya, by Le Grand Due from Heiress. She was purchased in Australia by Mr J. G. Alexander for four figures. Bronya is very speedy, but is highly-strung. She will be ridden by H. N. Wigigns. It is reported that W. J. Broughton will ride Longsword in the Manawatu Cup. That would entail several pounds overweight, and bring Longsword on the same terms with Typhoon as at Riccarton, where Typhoon finished three lengths in front. Broughton may be worth the extra half stone, but Typhoon is built to carry his 91b rise. The Hawke’s Bay hurdle rider, A. E. Lord, has been disqualified for two years. After the notorious hurdle race won by Malacca at Napier Park, the stipdendiary steward charged Lord with not riding the horse on its merits. The case was adjourned sine die, and after the Slater disqualification Lord was suspended for nine month. The stipendiary steward obtained permission to appeal to the District Committee, which has Increased the penalty to disqualificaion for two years. In Australia, a Derby and St. Leger winner invariably receives welght-for-age (9.0) as a four-year-old in the, Melbourne Cup. Last season Expanse won the Great Northern Derby and St. Leger, but received 7.12 (161 b below w.f.a.) in the Auckland Cup. Unfortunately for his owner he could not be given the requisite preparation. Mr G. G. Stead won 16 Champagne Stakes at Riccarton (10 in succession), and Sir G. Clifford 14., These two owners put up some remarkable performances in other seml-classics, but so far as handicaps are concerned the Auckland Railway is unique. During the last seven years H. N. Wiggins has ridden five winners (four in succession) ; Mr C. W. Jackson has owned three winners, and F. Smith has trained the last three. Two years ago the Smith stable provided all the placegetters—Beau Vaals, Cambria and Route March. Apparently the Jackson-Wiggins-Smith combination will be favourite this year with Sweet Biscuit. This half-sister to the Cup winner, Classform, won the Railway last year. RICCARTON NOTES (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 22.
