TWO SUCCESSES
New Zealand Division (Rec. 9.40 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 21. After heavy fighting, the Eighth Army has driven a wedge in the German positions north-west of Faenza, reports a correspondent. The New Zealanders cleared the east bank of the Senio River to three miles north-east of Route 9. Together, with another force pushing up west of the Lamone River they pressed on and captured San Silvestro and San Pietro, in Laguna, two miles north of Faenza. Two forces of the Eighth Army—one of which is the New Zealand Division, which occupied San Silvestro, two miles north-west of Faenza, and San Pietro, half a mile from the Senio River —are now threatening the key town of Castlebolognese, four miles east of Imola.
Liberators and fighter-bombers today attacked the Brenner Pass and targets inside Germany. They cut railway trucks south of Verona, leading to the Brenner Pass, in two places. Liberators of the Strategic Air Force also bombed railway installations at Rosenheim, 40 miles south-east of Munich.
Other planes attacked gun positions behind the Italian front. Royal Air Force Lancasters with escorting fighters of the Ninth Air Force again attacked the garrison railway town of Trier (Treves) Rhenish Prussia.
