GERALDINE CLOTHING NEED FOR GREECE

Helping People In The Devastated Lands Appeal By Supervisor Of Depot Clothing is urgently wanted for the people of Greece according to a report submitted by Mrs R. H. Orbell, depot supervisor, at a meeting of the Geraldine County Centre of the Red Cross. Mrs Orbell said that six cases of garments for shipment to Greece through the National Patriotic Fund Board had been dispatched. They included children’s and infants’ garments (all wool) washed in good condition, men's and boys’ clothing, women's and maids’ second-hand clothing in good order (all wool), 12 large bed spreads (all wool), and 19 smaller cot spreads, and assorted sizes of cotton and light weight new- garments. The total garments sent numbered 723. These were all the garments they had at the depot, some of which had been in stock for about four or five years, said Mrs Orbell. Since these goods had been shipped, Orari Bridge sub-centre had sent in a lot of children’s garments. There was a tendency for sub-centres to make children’s and infant’s garments for shipment overseas. This, although most worthy, would not meet the shortage oi clothing for adults. A good suggestion would be for all new materials, wherever possible, to be made into larger garments and the recondtioned or used material to be made into clothing for the smaller folks.

All the clothing packed for Greece was in excellent order and very well made. Sub-centres were to be congratulated on their efforts. Mrs Orbell said that the following materials had been received from Wellington for making up for refugees: 401 yards blue drill, 421 yards white

drill, 981 yards unbleached calico, 102 yards cellular shirting (khaki). 155 yards khaki drill, and three gross of buttons. The cost of this was £3B/15/and £2O of this amount had been paid by Mrs Tripp., The remaining cost would be paid by the Centre. This material would need expert cutting and designing as it was most suitable for making into adult clothing, said Mrs Orbell. Canon Norris had been in touch with Major Abel to ask for reliable patterns and also suggestions. Twenty-five Christmas parcels had been forwarded to service patients at Hanmer. Ten have been allotted to Temuka, and 15 to Geraldine. Subcentres had been asked to keep as far as possible an element of surprise in these parcels by endeavouring to vary the contents and making them different from previous years.

Church Supports Appeal The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church received a statement from the New Zealand Council of Organisations for Relief Service Overseas that a cable has been received from Brigadier J. T. King who is organising relief for Greece on behalf of New Zealand in conjunction with the United Nations’ Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.

This cable makes an urgent request for warm clothing which is needed in Greece by February, if possible. It is stated by Brigadier King that the conditions in the smaller towns and villages are pitiable, and women and children especially are urgently in need of such clothing. An appeal is therefore made for suitable clothing of all kinds and also for bedding. Parcels of clothing can be sent to the Red Cross Depot, said the Rev. E. R. E. Ross, and in view of the splendid part played, by our New Zealand men in Greece in the early days of the war, It Is hoped that, there will be s good response forthcoming. The recent outbreak of fighting in Greece made relief all the more necessary.

Air Training Cadets Two cadets sat the recent examination of the Geraldine Air Training Cadets. The results were:—R.N.Z.A.F. Pre-entry complete. R. M. Lee; first section radio, A. McKenzie. Plunket Society The members of the general committee of the Geraldine Plunket Society met at the residence of Mrs A. R. Manchester to bid farewell to Plunket Nurse Lee. The president, (Mrs J. Wyn Davison) spoke of the pleasant relations that had existed between Nurse Lee and all those with whom she had come in contact, Mrs Davison then presented her with a fountain pen and a shoulder spray with the committee’s best wishes for her success in the future. In replying, Nurse Lee thanked them for the presentation and also for the many kindnesses shown her and for their co-operation with her in her duties. She had enjoyed her stay in Geraldine and was sorry tb leave so many kind friends. She trusted that the work of the society would continue to progress in the district. Christmas Mails The postmaster reports that indications point to a record Christmas mail. So far both the outward and inward mails have been heavier than last year. An unusual feature is the large number of cards that are being handled inward and outward. Retail Trade Retailers report that good business has already been done and the prospects point to a record turnover on most businesses. Although stocks in many lines are somewhat limited, on the whole there is a very good selection of seasonal goods. Buyers are showing a preference for utility articles such as toilet requisites, handkerchiefs and hosiery. Stocks of tobacco and cigarettes are limited and there is a decided shortage of some brands of cigarette tobacco but it is anticipated that supplies will be sufficient to meet the normal demand.
