FAIRLIE. FIRE BRIGADE

Superintendent W. Close Retires After service extending since the formation of the Fire Brigade 35 years ago, Superintendent W. Close retired, and at the annual meeting of the Brigade complimentary reference was made to the long and valuable service given by him. He was extended the best thanks of all. In his reply Superintendent Close thanked all the members of the Brigade tor their help and co-operation over a long period. He specially thanked the old members who had seen such longservice with him. and also the younger members who were showing keenness and ability. Acting-Superintendent H. Foden reported on the activities of the Brigade for the year. He said that with the exception of chimney fires there had been no calls during the year. Twentythree meetings and practices had been held and a good average attendance maintained. Application had been made to the Mackenzie County Council for

most necessary equipment to place the Brigade in a position to deal with possible emergencies in the fire area. Some temporary help had been received for immediate needs, the main requirements being carried over until the next financial year of the Council. The Brigade was fortunate in the keenness of its younger members, who were supholding the standard of efficiency shown in the past. Two teams had competed in the provincial competitions held at Temuka. This was the first time the Brigade had been able to enter for outside competitions. The teams had performed creditably against more experienced Brigades. Officers w’ere elected as follows: — Superintendent, Mr H. Foden; deputysuperintendent, Mr A. H. Irving; mechanic, Mr W. Burgess; secretary, Mr C. J. Weir. High School Social The annual social of the pupils and ex-pupils of the Fairlie District High School was held in the school on Tuesday. There was a good attendance, and the numerous fancy dresses worn gave to the gathering an appearance suitable for the Christmas season. Simper was provided and served by the girls of the school.
