TOURIST TRAFFIC

Post-war Development

(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. Speaking to the vote of £880.059 for the Industries and Commerce Department (Tourist and Publicity Division) in the House to-night, members suggested air travel would bring many more tourists in the future and urged the need to make ready for this increase in traffic. The setting up of tourist and trade offices in countries overseas was suggested. The prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) complimented the film production unit on its work, particularly the production of weekly films dealing with the Activities' of the forces and industries in the Dominion. With inadequate equipment and under adverse circumstances, it had done an artistic job of war photography. The Hon. W. E. Parry said the matter of developing tourist 'traffic after the war was in the hands of a representative committee which had been given the task of drawing up a five-year plan of work with an indication of priorities. He was confident that the committee would produce a plan satisfactory to the House. New Zealand had to provide facilities equal to those offered by countries which would compete with it in the tourist business. Better hotel accommodation was one vital need. The State would have to be assisted to some extent where they controlled tourist resorts. There were also possibilities of developing new tours. The vote was passed and the House rose at 11.30 p.m.
