Investments In Victory Loan To-morrow Is Closing Date (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. Victory Loan subscriptions to-day total £32,211,751, an increase of £3,295,022 on last night’s figures. The objective percentages obtained to date are:— Southland 100 Auckland 91 Taranaki 79 Gisborne-East Coast .... 78 Otago 76 Marlborough 76 North Otago 76 Northland 71 Manawatu 71 Wellington 70 Nelson .. 70 Wanganui 67 Buller 66 Westland 66 Hawke’s Bay 64 South Canterbury 64 Waikato-King Country .. 60 Thames-Bay of Plenty .. 60 Canterbury .. 60 Wairarapa 60 The Dominion is in the sound position of owing more of its puolic debt to New Zealanders than to overseas Investors. When this country badly needed capital for its development Britain regularly provided public works loans, ana Britain was consequently our biggest creditor, states the National War Loan Committee. The independent financial position of New Zealand to-day coincides with a drastic alteration in British conditions. The Old Country has made such vast financial sacrifices to defend itself and ourselves that, as one of its statesmen declared when American lease-lend began to give relief, it had "reached the bottom of the Barrel.” Britain is now a deotor. not a creditor, nation, and it should be New Zealand’s privilege to relieve the motherland of calls 011 ner capital. A well-sustained contribution to all phases of tne great struggle, most oi all the gallantry 01 our manhood, proves the worthiness of New Zealand's claim to nationhood. Financial resources have piled up in the war years until disclosed assets show an anility to finance the Victory Loan six times over. Tne next two qays will prove our willingness to carry all the responsibility of nationhood. Financial indepenaence, adds the National War Loan Committee, has obligations as well as benefits. No section of the people is exempt from that duty, and there are just two more days in which to demonstrate that the country will not have shamefullv to admit that there are some New Zealanders willing to let the other fellow do the job for them, the fighting and the lending. £5OO From General Freyberg The Prime Minister to-day received the following message from Lieut.General Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C.: — “Thank you for your good wishes.
