Erroneous Returns Of Sales Tax

(N.Z.P.A.) GREYMOUTH, Oct. 2. Fines amounting to £250 "were imposed on Thomas Nell Mouat on 10 charges of making erroneous returns of sales tax on timber sold during 10 months. The total involved, £6BO, included a 10 per cent penalty. Charges of intent to defraud were dismissed. Defendant stated that he thought the returns were being made by his agent, and the omission was due to carelessness. He had no intention to defraud. Defendant said he operated two farms, a sawmill, an open-cast mine and a cartage business and had no time to devote to Icrical duties. The Magistrate (Mr Chisholm), remarking on the incredible inefficiency of the bookkeeping, absolved defendant of fraudulent intent in imposing the minimum fine of £25 on each charge.
