WAIMATE VICTORY LOAN

Church Effort Opens Auspiciously Anglican Vestry’s Scheme The drive to assist the Victory Loan campaign and at the same time provide finance for future building plans was given a good start at a social held to mark the seventy-second anniversary of the establishment of St. Augustine’s Church in Waimate. Under a scheme sponsored by the Vestry, parishioners are asked to subscribe toward the war loan, and give the stock purchased to the church building fund. The sum 6f £l4O was subscribed at the social. The Mayor (Mr W. F- Boland) congratulated the Church pn the attainment of its seventy-sccoml anniversary and on its effort for the Third Liberty Loan. He thanked the Vestry for the opportunity to explain to so many the figures and needs of the Victory Loan, and expressed a hope that the Church’s example and effort would exceed the record of last year. Mr W. J. Fletcher, as a parishioner, congratulated the Vestry on the plan and appealed, to all to do their utmost to make it a success. He referred to the fact that this year was the centenary of the arrival of the first white man in the district. In January, 1844, Bishop Selwyn. walking from Banks Peninsula to the Bluff, met Mr Shortland travelling nortlj and spent a night with him in camp about Wainono. As a churchman had pioneered then, the speaker said he hoped the church would pioneer in the gigantic t:is' of rebuilding the world. Kirk of the winning pianoforte selection presented by them at the Timaru Competitions. Trout Fry Liberated Trout fry numbering 160,000 from the Hakataramea hatcheries were liberated by officers of the Waimate Acclimatisation Societv in the Waihao River last week. The hatcheries are now operated by the Waimate and the Waitaki Societies in conjunction, and f : fry were in excellent condition.
