Liberation Of Belgium

(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON. Sept, 6. The social hall at Parliament Buildings was well filled this morning when Ministers, Members of Parliament, Consuls of the United Nations, and others, gathered to celebrate the liberation of Belgium and the advance of the Allied armies into Holland and Luxembourg. Toasts to all three countries were honoured and the Consuls-General of the two former replied to the speeches of the Prime Minister, Sir Harry Batterbee, Mr S. G. Holland, the United States Consul and the Moderator of the Wellington Presbytery, the last-named speaking on behalf of the churches in New Zealand. The Consul for Belgium (M. A. Nihotte) paid a tribute to Britain as the defender of freedom, and also referred to New Zealand’s close association with Belgium through the last war.
