DEATH OF INFANT
Drowned In Water Race
Lynette Kathleen Fort, aged 1 year 8 months, daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Fort, of Waitawa, Pleasant Point was drowned yesterday afternoon in an irrigation race about 6ft deep and 2ft wide, which runs in front of their farm.
The child followed her father who was going to speak to a neighbour. He told her to go back and watched her return. He continued talking to the neighbour until he heard the mother calling the child. A search was immediately made and the infant was found floating down the race about 15 chains away Dr. W. E. Gibson (Timaru) was summoned. Artificial respiration was administered first by the father, and then by Dr. Gibson for about two hours, but the child did not respond.
