NEW TECHNICAL COLLEGE
Maori Park Proposed
As Site
Question Of Valuation To
Be Determined
“I recently received from the Borough Engineer- (Mr R. J. Comrie) a plan of Maori Hill showing the proposed area under consideration as a possible site for a new Technical College,” states the secretary of the College Board of Managers (Mr G. A. Thompson) in a letter to the Timaru Borough Council. “In reply I wish to say on behalf of the Board that the area of approximately three and a half acres is the portion considered suitable and adequate for the erection of a new college. I would point out, however, that the College must present an imposing and attractive appearance when viewed from the town or a southerly direction, and, consequently, I consider it desirable that the front of the building should face south and that there should be a suitable drive to the entrance facing Virtue Avenue. It would be a pity if the Council permitted any building of houses on the south-west corner. This would interfere with the drive approach and certainly not enhance the appearance of the Park and school grounds. I would recommend, therefore, that this boundary line be taken straight through to Te Weka Street. “I shouold be pleased to have a written statement on the Council's proposal concerning the area and the method of determining valuation.” In a memorandum to a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council on Monday night, when consideration will be given Mr Thompson’s letter, the Town Clerk (Mr E. A. S. Killick) states: “It is now for the Council to decide whether it agrees to the above suggestion and also to the recommendation that a valuer be appointed by each side, and, if so, that the Technical College Board be informed accordingly. It is assumed that Mr T. P. Crowe, the Borough Valuer, would act for the Council.”
