NAVAL 1939-43 STARS
Claims Of Dominion Servicemen
Though it is understood that all New Zealand naval personnel who have served either ashore or afloat in forward areas of the South Pacific during the danger period will be entitled to the award of the 1939-43 Star, the position of those who served in New Zealand waters is not yet clear.
However, as naval service at and around Fiji at a certain period is included, it seems likely that minesweeper and patrol craft personnel who served about the coast of New Zealand at the time when the Niagara was sunk and at the period of greatest tension in the war with Japan will have a good cause for inclusion. That these could definitely be included in the definition “dangerous waters” is indicated not only by the toll of merchant shipping raided in this vicinity but by the number of mines swept up and the fact that one New Zealand naval vessel was sunk by striking a mine. Local regulations regarding the award are likely to be issued shortly.
