KEENLY CONTESTED GAMES (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 14. No past Singles champions are among the two-lifers from to-day's Play in the singles, but J. S. Anchor (Hamilton), who is an ex-pairs champion, went through unbeaten. He was given his hardest game by A. Jackson (North End, Invercargill), the score being 19-17. This was the only game Jackson lost. W. O’Neill (Runanga), who looks like being prominent in the postsectional play, was in fine form at West Harbour, where he won five games. W. Gilbert, who will be skipping for Kelburn in the fours, also won five games. F. Mayhew (Te Rangi) scored a big win against J. Slater (Middlemarch), 34-7. The most decisive score of the tournament was established when W. M. Morrison (United) won the last game against Slater. 31-0. A Southland player who has been doing well is J. Ure (North End), and he displayed impressive form throughout to win each of his games.

.w 8^ 1 ? 1 e x-champions were seen on the Kaikorai green, and to emerge with two lives, G. Gray (Kelburn) defeated such well-known players as R Haworth (Canterbury) 19-13 and H. C. Clarke (Carlton) 16-15. Haworth and Clarke also qualified. E. W Taylor (Carlton) defeated J. Veitch (Dunedin) and eliminated him from the competition. S. Vella (Onehunga) was one of the most spectacular players among the one-lifers and he helped to eliminate the former pairs champion, C. E. Tyrrell (Roslyn).

The Empire Games Players Beaten The winning pair at the British Empire Games in 1938, L. L Macev and W. Denison (Auckland) both met defeat in the Singles. G. H. Smith, a promising Edendale player, beat Macey e first round and went through with only one loss to A. Young Wes* End, Auckland) by 21-16. J. F. Smith (Wanaka) accounted for Denison and was unbeaten until the last round when J. Lee (Timaru) scored a narrow win 17-15 both men qualifying. A seasoned tournament player S. C. K. Smith (North End Invercargill) won his first four games. He beat A Bellennn (Christchurch R.S.A ) 31T-5 T Gray (Kelburn) one of the best-known players in the Dominion began with a convincing win against A. C. Wilson (Waihopai) and continued his winning run until G. H. Fraser stopped him in the fifth round by a margin of two points. Among the one-lifers is the veteran A. Dey (Christchurch) who beat J. C. Rigby (Dunedin) an ex-New Zealand singles champion 22-12. A Hutt player, McDonald, beat J. A. James (Owaka) by the record margin of 37-4. One of the early sensations of the day was provided in the Pairs competition by the Otago pair, J. w. Thomas and W. W. Callender, who defeated the present champions, H. W. Maslin and M. J. Squire (Hawera) 2120. Maslin and Squire were beaten again and failed to qualify. Two unbeaten combinations were A. W. Alloo and H. C. Alloo (Owaka) and a promising Tainui pair, W. Edgar and W. F. Mills.

The weather was dull throughout she day but the greens were all in very lair condition. Gusty winds were sroublesome on some greens.
