CANCER INSTITUTE

Establishment Urgent

(8 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 13. Tne formation of a New South Wales Cancer Institute is recommended by the English cancer experts, Drs. Ralston and Edith Paterson. Dr. Paterson and his wife were invited to visit New South Wales to advise the State Government on the establishment of a Cancer Institute for which £109,000 has already been voted. Their report, which has been handed to the premier of New South Wales, the Hon. W. J. McKell, estimates that the capital cost of the institute would not exceed £250,000; It might be considerably less if co-apera-tion of the Sydney hospitals were secured in the transfer of their plant and radium. The initial annual expenditure is estimated at £50,000 and the report suggests that this amount is already being inefficiently spent every year on cancer treatment in New South Wales. The report recommends the centralisation of all cancer treatment.
