Mr A. G. Buckland, of Hokitika, has been appointed manager of the National Bank of New Zealand at Pukekohe.

Major E. W. F. Harrop. Second N.Z.E.F., has left for Fiji, where he has taken up the appointment or A.D.C. to the Governor, Sir Phillip Mitchell.

Mr A. E. Davenport, resident electrical engineer of the Works Department, Greymouth, has been transferred on promotion to the position of District Electrical Engineer, Auckland.

Captain W. W. Hender, of the Union Steam Ship Company, has been appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (0.8. E. for meritorious sea service. He has been in the service of the company since 1904, and has commanded 23 of the company’s ships. Mrs F. I. Kain, Superintendent of the W.A.A.F. in New Zealand since March, 1941, has been granted special leave and listed on the reserve of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. In the meantime she is automatically succeeded by her deputy, Mrs E. N. Carlyon, who holds the rank of squadron officer.

The death was announced recently from England of Mrs Ross De Costa, formerly Miss Ethel Benjamin, Dunedin. Mrs De Costa, who was educated at the Otago Girls’ High School, and later at the University of Otago, where she took her degree in law, was the first woman lawyer in New Zealand. She was interested in the foundation of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, and was present at the first meeting held in Dunedin on March 1, 1899. She acted for some time as one of the honorary solicitors of the society. Mrs De Costa had been living for some years in the south of France, and made her way to England after the German occupation. Her death was the result of a street accident.
