TOWN SAVED
Menaced By Bush Fires
(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Jan 13. An all-night battle by 1000 firefighters saved the town of Beechworth, in North-eastern Victoria, 170 miles from Melbourne. Great fires, rekindled from the dying embers of earlier blazes bv strong winds, extended over 50 miles through heavily timbered country and menaced the town on three sides. Provided no unexpectedly strong wind arises. Beechwood is now considered out of danger.
