FAIRLIE DEATH OF EARLY RESIDENT

Former A. and P. Show

Secretary

A recent cablegram from South Africa announced the death of an old and highly respected former Fairlie resident, Mr Herbert G. Smith, who for many years took an active part in the promotion of any move towards the wellbeing and advancement of the district.

Although he didn’t identify himself with public affairs his name was familiar in connection with various clubs and committees, and he also was one of the foremost agents in bringing Into existence the Mackenzie Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He took over the secretaryship in its second year and occupied that post for some years.

Mr Smith was a keen sport and allround athlete and was an active member of the aid Mackenzie Football Club. He was a representative player of the original Fairlie Tennis Club, a member of the C.Y.C. and later of the Mackenzie Mounted Rifles. He was recognised far and wide as a keen horseman—especially reinsman—and was often called on to pilot early tourist parties “across country,” to Mt. Cook.

His wife, (nee Agnes Mee, Timaru) predeceased him some years ago and their only son fell a victim to the effects of the Great War. Their only daughter resides in the North Island.
