RACING REVIEWED Nightcalm Again Nightcalm was preferred to Heidelberg and Pocket Flash for the hurdle race, but his price was still a liberal one. Roseman and Midgard made the runing from Nightcalm, but turning for home Gold Nugget was in command from Pocket Flash. Nightcalm, and Heidelberg (who had gradually moved up from the rear). Taking charge at the last jump, Nightcalm was not extended to beat Gold Nugget by four lengths, with Heidelberg a length away and Pocket Flash next. A Win For Hook Five horses were in demand for the Novice Handicap—Good Cast 903-1078, Pay Book 903-778, Prize Ring 626-665, Twelve Pointer 600-839, and Sally Lux 504-658. Bonnie Night and Contemptuous cleared out the reverse way before the start, and there was a lot of delay when they were retrieved. Contemptuous, Chestnut Glow and Good Cast were among those fortunate in the dispatch, and at the home turn they were still prominent from Paybook, Lancewing and Old Glory. Good Cast cannoned into Chestnut Glow in the straight. In a good finish Grand Forest got up on the outside to beat Good Cast by nearly a length and pay approximately two score. Chestnut Glow and Chellow Dene were heads away, followed by Bonnie Night. Makes the Grade Sister Sal, making her debut in open company, was installed a pronounced favourite for the Flying, but there was close betting over all the others except Rawhamai. Silver Lily jumped out clear of Invulnerable and Hearth, and on the home bend Silver Lily and Hearth were leading from Rawhamai, Invulnerable and Royal Lancer. The last two at this stage were Sister Sal and Monetary. Hearth and Silver Lily were still in command a furlong from home, but Sister Sal secured a lucky opening on the rails and cantered through to win by nearly a length from Monetary, who finished strongly on the outside to beat Silver Lily by a head. Invulnerable and Night Lancer were next.

Big Race to The Raker Although she had been raised almost a stone for her Invercargill win, Sascha 1828-1328 was preferred to The Raker 1497-1555 for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. Invincible and Paladeo lost ground at the start, but the pace, at the outset was moderate and at the mile Paladeo took command from The Raker, Bascule, Foxhaven and Amorlad. Across the top the order was Paladeo, The Raker, Foxhaven, Bascule, Sascha (who was making a characteristic run from the back). The Raker, Sascha and Foxhaven were fighting for supremacy a furlong from home, with Sascha being acclaimed the winner, but The Raker again finished stoutly, and won by a neck. Foxhaven was just over a length away, beating Amorlad by a neck. Another to Sal’s Pal Nigger Lad, racing in the colours of trainer F. W. Ellis, was the early favourite for the Abbotsford Handicap, but late money sent Sister Sal's brother Sal’s Pal to the head of the quotations. Coy, Sir Saladin and Nigger Lad were slow away, the last-named being chopped out badly. Bonnie Chela, Sal’s Pal and True Mate were first away, and racing to the home turn Bonnie Chela and Sal’s Pal were clear of True Mate, Cruden Bay and Night Fighter. Sal’s Pal beat off challenges and looked like winning decisively, but he had to be kept at it to stall off a late run by Fireway, who headed him in another stride. Night Fighter was two lengths away, ahead of Coy and Old Glory.

Joygiver Confirms Form Lyndall 2396-1436 was in better demand than Royal Flight 1109-931 and Joygiver 812-1262 for the Hopeful Handicap. Runaway and Rahin began badly. The Timaru-owned Espadrille led round the top and into the straight from Joygiver and Lyndall, but at the two furlongs post Joygiver dashed to the front to win by nearly four lengths from Piccolo, who beat Periwig by half a head. Bonny Flight was fourth. Hazlett Cup All the accepting owners sportingly ran their horses in the Hazlett Cup. The Southland filly Aurora Australis 2622-1688 was always favourite from Scottish Dale 1502-1327 and Lord Advocate 1138-1171. Lord Nuffield led out from Royal Flight and Aurora Australis, and they raced in that order for three furlongs, where Silver Sox broke down. Lord Nuffield piloted Aurora Australis and Royal Flight round the top and into the straight, but two furlongs from home the favourite joined issue, and she galloped away to win by three lengths from Scottish Dale, who came with a belated run to beat Night Lancer by two lengths. Lord Advocate was fourth. Nearly a Century Twenty-one hacks lined up for the Waihola Handicap, the final race. Backers selected Bridgehead 2194-1606, Gunga Din 1429-1599, and Abdicate 1051-1114. Bridgehead got out on the move, a rather doubtful advantage, as he had to be hustled to avoid being cut out on the turn. At the mile Boolamskee took over the pace, and ran past the six ahead of Bridgehead Pink Clover, Courtdress. Gamble and Kohara. Justitia made up ground across the top. A furlong from the judge Gamble dashed to the front, but kohara caught him 30 yards from home, and won by a neck from Gay Thread, who appeared wide out and beat Gamble by a neck. Honest Sal finishing past on the rails, was a head further back. Kohara paid close to three figures for a win and more than a score for a place.
