ELECTRIC IRON CAUSES FIRE
The danger of failing to switch off electrical equipment was demonstrated about 4.30 p.m. yesterday, when an outbreak of fire was caused by an electric iron which had been left “alive” on a chair in a kitchenette at the residence of Mr G. A. Marra, 63A Wai-iti Road, Timaru. The occupiers of the house were absent at the time. Observing smoke coming from the room, two boys who live next door broke a window to gain an entrance, and extinguished the blaze before the arrival of the Timaru Fire Brigade. Little damage was done, but the chair was charred and the wall of a nearby cupboard was badly scorched. As the outbreak was caused electrically, two members of the staff of the Municipal Electricity Department made an inspection.
