The reappearance of enemy submarines off the east coast of the United States after an absence of seven months was disclosed when the Navy announced that a medium-sized American merchantman was torpedoed early in April. Forty lives were lost, including the captain, all the ship’s officers and nine members of a naval gun crew. The ship burst into flames and sank in three minutes.
