Election

Although no definite date has yet been fixed for the general election, instructions have been received by Registrars of Electors to commence the work of purging the electoral rolls. No special staff will be installed at the Electoral Office in Temuka for the time being, said the Registrar (Mr S. G. Heffernan). The preliminary work Ls being done by the Post Office staff in the evenings on an overtime basis. Steps are being taken to have the roll of those eligible to vote in the Temuka electorate checked by all postmasters in the electorate, and notices objecting to the retention of their names on the roll will be sent to all those who have not taken steps to advise the registrar that they have left the electorate. BILLETING OF MARINES In common with other districts in South Canterbury, a request has been received by the Red Cross Society in Temuka for accommodation for convalescent United States Marines. A number of people in town and country have offered hospitality, and further offers will be welcomed by the Depot Supervisor (Miss M. McShane). FAT LAMB SEASON The fat lamb season is beginning show signs of easing up. and it is expected that killings will be greatly reduced after Easter, said a stock agent. The season laterly has been a very favourable one for fattening, and both weight and quality have been favourable for growers. It is not known how many lambs remain to be killed, but it looks as if their numbers will be less than in former years. ZONING OF DELIVERIES Arrangements for the zoning of deliveries in the Temuka district have now been completed and the recommendations of the Temuka Zoning Committee have been forwarded to the District Transport Officer for his approval before they are officially gazetted, said the Postmaster (Mr S. G. Heffernan). The full scheme entailed months of work and a large number of meetings Complete agreement was reached on the part of all tradesmen concerned and the scheme is now in full operation. EUCHRE AND DANCE There was a good attendance at the euchre and dance given in the Maori Hall by the Arowhenua Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society in aid of Maori participation in the United Nations Fair. The net proceeds amounted to £9/1/9. Card prizes were won by Misses N. Clinch and A. Hopkinson and Messrs F. Spencer and H. Tereihga. Mystery prizes were won by Miss Scannell and Mr C. Wade and a Monte Carlo waltz by Miss D. Stewart and Mr W. Hopa. A competition was won by Mr W. Hopa. DANCE There was a good attendance at the dance given by the New Zealand Insulators Social Club in the Parish Hall on Friday night. A feature was a number of songs given by Miss R. Hannifin. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss N. Moorq and Mr W. Milne, and a Lucky Spot waltz by Miss D. McGillen and Mr G. Gourley. Extras were played by Miss E. Trumpet and Pipers F. McGillen and Keith Surridge. Mr S. Erwood acted as M.C.
