Schools’ Garden Clubs

Slendid Exhibition

Pupils of the Waimate Primary School together with those of the Waituna School, were exhibitors at a display of flowers, fruit and vegetables staged at the Waimate School as an extension of the schools’ garden club movement. The two schools were grouped for the purpose of the show, and one of the main objects of the exhibition was to give parents some idea of the work of which the children were capable. Tire judge, Mr C. Coventry, expressed amazement at the number and quality of exhibits. There was a great improvement shown on the previous year's fixture, he said. Mr Coventry added that the early inculcation of the children in fixtures of the kind should earn the school authorities the gratitude of those concerned with flower shows in the future. IKAWAI INSTITUTE Mrs Bartlett presided over an attendance of 60 members at the February meeting of the Ikawai Women’s Institute. The roll call for the day was “A Gardening Question.” Letters were received from Sister Frances Brown and Gunner Jack Balfour thanking members for parcels they had sent. A letter was received from Mrs Gillingham regarding group travel. It was left with the president to ask the school children to each write a letter to send with the next consignment of soldiers’ parcels. The competition was a pair of socks, nine pairs being handed in. Many articles were handed in for the Patriotic and Red Cross depots. HUNTER INSTITUTE

At the monthly meeting of the Hunter Women’s Institute, there were 12 members present and Miss M. Mercer presided. A pantry afternoon is to be held at the March meeting to Miss M. Robinson. Miss M. Mercer was re-elected president for the coming year. Mrs A. McKenzie demonstrated the re-covering of an umbrella. The Golden Thread was given by Miss M. Mercer. Mrs Clark had on view Corporal C.
