A LABOUR STALWART
Mr Ben Tillett Passes LONDON, Jan. 27. The well-known Trade Union leader and former member of Parliament, Mr Ben Tillett, died in London yesterday at the age of 83. Mr Tillett, who hud a colourful career, had been a stalwart of ths Trade Union movement all Ins life. His varied career included service in the Royal Navy and merchant marine, the occupations of circus hand, shoemaker, docker and agitator. Mr Tillett, who was a former chairman of the Trade Union Congress, was the founder of the Dockers’ Union, and he was a prominent figure in the great transport strike of 1911. It was due to his work that the dockers secured the first agreement governing conditions of port labour.
