RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 21. There were frequent heavy showers of rain to make conditions unpleasant this morning. Prince Shad and Silver Mask, working separately, went well over six furlongs. K. Wilson will ride them at Trentham on Saturday. Their owner, Mr F. C. Christie, will take them north to-night. A. S. Ellis will leave to-night on his way to Trentham with his two horses. W. F. Ellis will ride Rawhamai in the Metropolitan Handicap and A. Stokes will be on Gunga Din in the highweight event. Both should race well, as their recent track gallops have been good. R. J. Mackie will ride Supercharged at Trentham on Saturday. L. J. Ellis will be on Barras, also Ivar, whose programme is uncertain, as he is in two races. Good Scout has two engagements on Saturday, but the popular opinion is that he will run in the January Handicap, one mile, in which he should be hard to beat. Arrangements had been made for the three-year-old, Warfarer, to go north to-night, but the plans have been changed. The patron of J. L. Muir’s Waikato stable by whom he was to have been raced has been taken ill and the sale has not been completed. He should show some form for Mr G. Murray Aynsley this season.

A big bay filly, purchased at the yearling sales last week by Mr S. G. Duffield, of Christchurch, has arrived here and has gone into V. Lee’s stable. She is by Gynerium from Desirable, a Paper Money mare, tracing to Eulogy. It is understood that the colt by Lang Bien from Pacify, by Limond from Makepeace, purchased by Mr B. Dooley, of Amberley, will be trained by J. Bryce. Mr F. C. Christie has arrived from South Canterbury with Prince Shad and Silver Mask, who have been shipped to Wellington. . Prince Shad will be one of the popular fancies in the Douro Handicap. Although he was an acceptor. Tea Drop will not be at Trentham on Saturday. His feet have caused trouble lately and, as he has been sore, the trip was cancelled. Mounts of A. E. Ellis on Saturday will be Peter’s Wife, with whom he was fourth last week, also Royal Merit in the Douro Handicap. L. J. Ellis has Sir Bradbury, Flying Ace and Tavern Light among his mounts for Saturday. Other engagements will be finalised when he returns to Wellington. The veteran jumper, Erination, was on the track this morning. He came back recently from a spell looking in great health, and S. Barr will start him off now in preparation for another steeplechase campaign. Probably, as was the case last year, he will be got ready for Riverton at Easter. S Barr has been spelling his team since he returned home from his southern holiday trip, but he will resume work now. Winning Agnes lost condition. as she would not eat, but she has started to pick up. Warfield and Gallopade were sore but they are improving. , ’ Hurry Girl did not show her best form jn her holiday racing and, as she seemed to have trained off. she has 'been turned out for a good rest.
