RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 12. Rain fell yesterday, but conditions were fine for the work this morning. The trial grass track was in good order, though slow. There was not a great deal of fast galloping, most of the horses being well forward after their recent racing. The Southland pair. Royal Lancer and Sal, were given short sprints. They will go north to-night, when arrangements have also been made for three Otago horses, The Joker. Lady Nuffield and First In. to travel. Riccarton trainers who will leave tonight for Trentham are: M. J. Wadley, John Gay, Soncy; G. Ridgway, Arctic Dawn, Hurry Home; A. McMullan, Mauretania. The other horses from here will travel on Thursday. A Messervy has been engaged to ride Grey Night. The Joker, Lady Nuffield, Scottish Dale, Soncy and Hurry Home at Trentham on Saturday. L. J. Ellis has John Gay and Autolite as his only definite mounts at present. R. J. Mackie will be on Supercharged and D. J. Thistoll on Good Scout. Though Shikari was an acceptor for the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham, he will not fulfil his engagement. Donnybrook Fair appeared in the Ruapehu Handicap in error and he will not make the trip. The Canterbury Jockey Club will hold a non-totalisator meeting on Saturday, February 13. Three races will be run. the Middle Park Plate, for two and three-year-olds, and two other events, both for two-year-olds.
