BLACKOUT OVER

Lifting Of Restrictions

Position In South Canterbury

‘The lifting of the blackout restrictions as set out in the New Zealand Gazette of December 23 affects South Canterbury to the following extent,” replied the Lighting Controller. Mr J. M. Bishop, when interviewed by a Timaru Herald” representative yesterday.

“During periods of emergency.” said Mr Bishop, ‘all the provisions apply as formerly; that is to say, all street fights and other outside lights are to be controlled from one centralised point and a blackout room must be provided by everyone.

Outside Periods of Emergency.—An almost complete relaxation is afforded, and this is to continue during the pleasure of the Dominion Lighting Controller, who may introduce the blackout restrictions again at anv time by giving public notice to that effect. “The relaxation means: (1) That no restrictions at all are now placed on the use of any outside light < which included neon signs' beyond the requirement that such lights must not be left on time switch control, nor must such outside light be left burning unattended. (2) That no restrictions at all are placed on street lighting. <3) No restrictions at all are placed on internal lighting of any premises, dwellings or otherwise. (4) No restrictions are now placed on interna! shop window lighting. Motor Vehicle Lighting “No restrictions are now placed on motor car lights beyond the fact that vehicles in the headlight restrictions area of Timaru Borough must be prepared at any instant to revert to the reduced lighting previously in force, and to that end must not have any alterations made to the wiring where this was originally necessary in order to comply with the reduced lighting regulations.

“As developments in the war situation will determine whether or not the restrictions now suspended will be reverted to,” Mr Bishop concluded, “it is strongly advised that screens or blinds or shrouds for lighting sources should not be discarded, but should be carefully stored, so that in the event of the restrictions being again introduced it will be possible to do so with the minimum of delay.” Street Lighting Restored (N.Z.P.A.) AUCKLAND. Jan. 12. The work of restoring to normal all street lights in Auckland not visible from the sea is to begin immediately. Tire Auckland Lighting Controller, Mr Bartley, stated that in the case of an emergency the street lights would be switched off.
