Statistics For Year

A marked decrease in the volume of business handled by the Waimate Magistrate’s Court during 1942. compared with 1941, is revealed in statistics supplied by the Clerk of the Court (Mr J. Mclndoe). The drop is reflected in the figures for both criminal and civil cases. During . 1942 93 criminal cases came before the Court, as against 168 for the previous year. In the Children's Court, however, there were eight cases, compared with four during the previous 12 months. In the civil section fewer than half the number of plaints were issued, the total being 52 as against 140. Only 18 judgment summons were issued, compared with 52 in 1941. A total of £l7O/2/6 was received in fines, the amount for the previous year being £357/19-6. Criminal fees dropped from £63/5/- to £2B/16/-. Civil fees paid in stamps were less by twothirds, £54/1/- being paid against £154/16/- previously. Licensing fees were £29/4/- onlv two shillings less than the year before. VITAL STATISTICS An increase in births in 1942 as compared with the previous year is shown in the vital statistics for Waimate. The figures for the previous year are given in parentheses in the following details:—Births 166 (157); deaths 69 (65); marriages 35 (42); marriages by registrar 4 (2). Statistics for the quarter ended December 31 are: Births 49 (47); deaths 16 (10); marriages 9 (9); marriages by registrar 1 (1)
