HEALTH CAMP

Children Enjoy Holiday Principles Of Modern Diet Nurse C. A. McGuire, matron of the South Canterbury Health Camp at Geraldine, has 35 girls and 27 boys in her charge and already visitors have commented on the efficient organisation so evident. The camp is situated in the Geraldine District High School Buildings, Raukapuka, and this modern building with its large, well ventilated rooms is ideally suited to the purpose. Classrooms have been converted into comfortable dormitories, with rows of small stretchers and lockers. Miss Hazel Winter. D.H.Sc.. who is supervising the menus, concentrates on a lighter diet than usual, fresh vegetables and fruit replacing the larger quantities of meat and heavier foods. Meals are cooked on the principles of modern food values and all dishes are tastefully served. In fact, the children consider it all one delightful party. The matron has reported that the children have all settled down to the camp routine, and that there has been no case of sickness. “I have never seen children eat so heartily,” Miss McGuire said. “Drs G. W. Curtis and L. C. Mail of Geraldine have both visited the camp, but so far their services have not been required.” Daily Routine Reveille is at 7 o'clock and the first order of the day is tooth-brush drill, and at 8 o'clock breakfast is served. Each day is planned to give adequate rest and recreation, all the children having a rest period during both morning and afternoon. The school "rounds provide ample space for games, and the camp has its own sports equipment. Swimming is enjoyed in the municipal baths. There are also plenty of indoor amusements for wet davs, meccano sets for the boys, sewing and scrap-books for the girls. The camp has its own concert party, and some surprising talent has been discovered among the children. Mr R. J. Runciman, president of the S.C. Health Camp Committee, visited the camp on Sunday, and expressed his thanks to the matron and her voluntary helpers, and to tlie people of Geraldine who had generously supplied meat, fruit and vegetables. “However the hearty appetites of the children have seriously depleted supblies,” Mr Runciman informed a “Timaru Herald" representative yesterday. An invitation has been received from the management of the picture theatre and many entertainments are planned for the remaining period of the camp A special service was conducted on Sunday. Training College students, members of the Geraldine V.A.D. and Women’s Institute are giving valuable assistance to the organisers of the camp.
