BENEFICIAL RAIN
Farmers Delighted TWO INCHES FALL AT CLAREMONT Farmers in South Canterbury were delighted with the rain which' began yesterday, it was learned from inquiries made last night.. It was badly needed, and, although it will delay harvesting operations, these arc not oil a large scale at present. “It is a beneficial rain and was needed for green crops and • sheep feed." commented Mr P. R. Talbot, of Claremont. “It will go a long way in assuring an adequate supply of winter feed.” The fall was not so heavy in the Temuka district, but was appreciable in the Waimate County, and will greatly benefit the root crops. The hot summer weather experienced over the holidays made a fall of rain welcomed at this time of the year. The harvesting of grass-seed, rape seed and the earlier crops will be hindered, but, generally speaking, farmers were glad to see the rain. No damage was reported anywhere last night. Two inches of rain had been recorded at Claremont at 11 p.m. when it was still falling. At 4 p.m. yesterday seven points over the inch was the recording at the Timaru Park observatory. The fall was evenly spread over the district, but was heavier in some parts than others.
