RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Royal Lancer’s score is now 16 wins and £5230. He should earn some more money at Trentham. The investments on the Waihola Handicap at Dunedin exceeded £B7OO, and established a new record lor a single race at Wingatui. Southland horses accounted for the principal treble at Dunedin on Saturday, and brought their aggregate for the season to £11,407. Of this sum, F. W. Ellis’s team have collected £4365. Expanse, winner of the Royal Stakes at Auckland, is a two-year-old halfbrother to Defaulter. Subudar, who won his second race at the meeting, is a three-quarter brother in blood to High Caste. Lord Chancellor's win in the Nathan Handicap at Auckland suggests that there may have been some justification for the claim that he was unlucky in the Great Northern Derby. Still he had only 7.0 in the handicap, and a real Derby colt should be capable of carrying another stone with credit. The turnover (£123,782) at Epsom on Trotting Cup day was not only a record for a harness meeting in Auckland—it exceeded the previous highest by £46,23l—but was a record for any day’s trotting in New Zealand. The previous highest was £99,419 at Addington in November last. Strip bleeds in about every second race he runs on the flat, but there is never any sign of the trouble in hurdle races. This suggests that he has not been extended in his wins over obstacles. In the Owhiro Hurdles at Dunedin on Saturday it was Jacksonville who bled and had to be pulled up. Royal Flight ran up to form in the two-year-old handicap at Dunedin, but Invulnerable ran a long way below his best. It is probable that he was not ready for the hard race the filly gave him on Boxing Day. He does not look so rebust as in the spring, and it will be surprising if he Is asked to race again before next season. The Wingatui track has seldom been faster than it was on Saturday. Strip led off in the hurdle race by breaking by a fifth of a second Superex’s record for the track, and in the Jockey Club Handicap Spanish Lad cut a fifth of a second off Swordstick's figures for 104 furlongs. In the Hazlett Cup, Royal Lancer equalled Silver Ring’s Imin 38 2-ssec for a mile. Strip, Gold Robe and Noko took turns at pacemaking in the first half of the hurdle race at Wingatui on Saturday, but at the six furlongs Taxpayer took charge from Gold Robe and Strip. Strip leaped to the front at the second last fence and led to the straight from Taxpayer, Colonel Rouge and Nightcalm. Strip was not troubled to win from Taxpayer, who gave his best display so far as a hurdler. Colonel Rouge and Nightcalm were next. Strip established a new record for the track. Girl Friend, Silver Mask and Prince Leighon led Elvena in the early stages of the Novice Handicap at Dunedin, and this quartet turned for home with Steward in attendance. Prince Leighon forged ahead in the straight, but was run down on the post by Steward. Elvena registered another minor place, and Silver Mask beat the rest of a strong-out field. All the acceptors for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap paraded except Gold Flight. Don’t Forget essayed his usual tactics of trying to win all the way, and, with Sing Sing in attendance, he held command until well into the home stretch. There Arctic Dawn, The Raker, Secret Flight and Kevin joined in, and The Raker was being hailed as the winner when Spanish Lad dashed up to win on the post from The Raker and Kevin. Arctic Dawn and Secret Flight were next. Royal Chorus and Compeer, first and second in the sprint at Invercargill, finished in the same order in the Flying Handicap at Dunedin. Royal Chorus opened an account in open company in the Aparima Handicap at Riverton, but he got a break at the barrier and the performance was discredited. He hit top form again at Wyndham, where he was second to Fleet Street. True Mate and Miss Clorane set the main in the Abbotsford Handicap at Wingatui, and they were followed along the back and to the straight by Court Dress and Irish Ruler. Court Dress and Irish Ruler headed True Mate and Miss Clorane retired a furlong from the post, but the three-year-old, Junior, finished strongly and won from Court Dress and Irish Ruler. True Mate was next. Junior was a winner over six furlongs at Waikouaiti after failing over five. His success over seven, after coming from the back, suggests that the wrong tactics had been adopted in previous races. Invulnerable and Royal Flight pretty well monopolised the attention of investors on the Hopeful Handicap at Dunedin, but the favourite was never dangerous, and Royal Flight went under to Supercharged, to whom she was conceding a lot of weight. These two were in front all the way. and at one point the filly looked likely to win, but Supercharged wore her down and beat her by a narrow margin. In Chancery defeated Invulnerable tor third money. Night Lancer’s chance in the Hazlett Cup was negligible, but the other three were stoutly supported. Night Lancer raced just clear of Royal Lancer and Lord Nuffield for five furlongs, but at the three the trio were in line, showing a little daylight from Boany. Royal Lancer took sole charge after entering the straight, and won from Botany, who put in a strong claim and decisively defeated Lord Nuffield for second. There was a record pool on the Waihola Handicap, the concluding event at Wingatui. Kohara and Milton Abbas were leading from Prince Shad and Sal at the mile, and these positions were maintained until they were well into the straight. There the two pacemakers retired, and the Orari-trained gelding, Prince Shad, went on to win from Donnybrook Fair, who came with a great run from the back to defeat Sal for second. Abdicate was fourth. DUNEDIN J. C. HAZLETT CUP TO ROYAL LANCER (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 9. The Dunedin Juckey Club’s meeting was held in fine weather with a large attendance. The track was in perfect order. The totalisator handled £44,703, compared with £31,664 on Cup day last season.
