CRICKET FIRST CENTURY OF SEASON

Aggressive Display By G. Fitzgerald

Six Sixes And 16 Fours

Scoring the first century of the season in the South Canterbury Cricket Association's friendly competition, G. Fitzgerald, of Army B, carried his bat for 115 in the match against Timaru-Old Boys at the showgrounds on Saturday. Timaru-Old Boys beat Army B by 48 runs on the first innings and at Park Star-Fairview beat West End by 45 runs on the first strike. Timaru-Old Boys v. Army B Army B who batted first at the showgrounds collapsed for 30 runs D. Allan (six for 15) and B. Walker (four for 11) sharing the bowling honours. With 10 batsmen, Timaru-Old Boys put on 78 in their first strike. Then Army B came again. Argus, the opening bat, made 26, with four fours, and Fitzgerald, the fourth man in, stayed. Timaru-Old Boys tried five bowlers but Fitzgerald continued to hit them to the fence. Army B declared with six down for 169 and Timaru-Old Boys were set the task of hanging on until stumps and snatching a win on the first innings, which they did. The Army B bowlers collected good averages in this innings, but S. Askey, who topscored with seven, carried his bat and his team to victory. Cockroft, who opened for Feld Regiment, contributed a valuable 16. and E. Martin (27) and I. Brooker (18) showed good form. The last man in, L. Bradbury, helped the total past the century with a solid 24. School had lost five wickets for nine runs before D. McLeod made a stand.
