RECORD TOTAL
South African Budget
CAPE TOWN, January 7.
It is anticipated that the budget will reach the record of £150,000,000, including £50,000,000 on the loan account. The defence appropriations in 1942 are £8,000,000, of which £65,000.000 will be spent by the end of November. At present the expenditure on defence is averaging £10.000,000 a month, including expenditure incurred on behalf of other Allied powers. In spite of a surplus of at least £6,000,000 the Government will continue its policy of lessening the pressure of the increasing purchasing power and of the decreasing supply of commodities. Consequently, increased taxation and a stiffening of compulsory savings is foreshadowed.
