RED WALKING STICKS

Suggested To Denote Invalid Soldiers

The Mayor of Timaru, Mr A. E. S. Hanan, following up his recent appeal for respect for the white walking stick, the customary indication that the user is sightless, has suggested the use of a red stick by the deaf, infirm and by invalid soldiers. “I have seen many near-accidents through motorists not knowing that a pedestrian was deaf,” said Mr Hanan to a “Timaru Herald” representative yesterday. “and I consider that the use and recognition of this symbol of physical handicaps would afford a much needed protection to many of our less fortunate citizens.”
