A Long Overdue Win Millisle joined Listowel in the lead after five furlongs in the Progressive Handicap and drew’ clear three furlongs from home, winning easily from his stable-mate, Parrish Guide, who finished strongly and stalled off Manian’s late challenge. Listowel tired and Pegasus Bay broke early in the race. Happy Man Turns Tables Guncase soon opened up a gap in the Telegraph Handicap, Waipahi and Kid Wolf following, while Happy Man joined them at the home turn. Happy Man drew out in the straight for a comfortable win, while Waipahi stalled off Kid Wolf easily. Mankind made a late dash to beat Guncase for fourth. First Win at Headquarters Belfast Jack soon took the lead in the Middleton Handicap and stayed there, though he had not much to spare from Tokalon, who was second throughout. The field closed up at the home turn and Conflagrate, the stable-mate of the winner, snatched third place from Golden River, with Jerry Parrish and Native Man almost on terms. Mankind Pays Over Half a Century Mankind led all the way and just hung on long enough to win the Mason Handicap in a thrilling finish. Countless was always handy and finished well for second, narrowly beating Fine Art, who came home with a brilliant run, while Coquette, Burt Scott and Accountant were heads away, after being well placed throughout. A Double Winner Mohican, Within and Dark Hazard had a good lead after three furlongs in the Hornby Handicap and, though the field close up, they drew away again in the straight, Mohican repeating his first day’s success in easy fashion. Mervyn Derby went off in a tangle, while the favourite, Margin, broke at the end of a furlong. Race Spoilt by Mishap The Selwyn Handicap, with eight starters, was spoilt by mishaps. Pamelus broke at the start, and Jacose after 100 yards, while at the end of a furlong and a half Black Surprise broke and fell, Jack Spratt and Single Star following over her. Royal Surprise led for a mile and a quarter, where Jackaranda took charge, but Gold Pot ran past him in the straight, winning easily. Another Big Dividend Shady Glen led for more than a mile in the Prebbleton Handicap. Warfield then took charge and, though Loyal Friend headed him in the straight, Warfield battled on for a narrow win. Nightbeam and Battle Colours were next after being well placed during the last six furlongs. , The favourite, Great News, went well for a mile. Ronald Logan Improves Ronald Logan was in front early in the Final Handicap and never looked like being beaten. Loyal Rey finished fast to beat Coquette for second. Then came Hardy Oak, who began slowly followed by Sabu and Bayard, who were prominent all the way. GREYMOUTH J.C. SIR GUNDI WINS AGAIN (N.Z.P.A.) GREYMOUTH. Jan. 2.
