ATTACKS ON SHIPPING
U. S. Submarines Score Successes 18.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Jan. 2. A Navy communique States:— ' American .submarines operating in the Pacific and the Far East sank two large cargo ships, a medium-sized passenger and cargo ship, a mediumsized cargo ship, a medium-sized tren - port, a medium-sized tanker, and a small cargo ship. They damaged one destroyer. These sinkings have not been announced in previous communiques.” The Associated Press says that the total Japanese ships sunk by American submarines since December 7, 1941, is now 112. A second communique states:—“On Friday, a force of Liberator heavy bombers, escorted by Lightning fighters, attacked Japanese cargo ships it. Kiska harbour. Six Zeros attempted to intercept and one of them was destroyed. A near hit was scored on i small ship, but clouds prevented the observation of full results. No American planes were lost. On the samp day Dauntless dive-bombers bombed the Vicinity of Kokumbono, where the Japanese headsuarters on Guadalcanal are believed to be located. Dense jungle growth prevented the observatit > 4 the results. Marauder medium bombers escorted by Alracobra fighters bombed the Munda area on New Georgia Island. An our planes returned undamaged. The results of the attacks have not been reported.”
