LAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT AT MAORI PARK

Play At Interesting Stage

Titles Will Be Decided To-day

Play in the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's annual New Year tournament at Maori Park reached an interesting stage on Saturday, when in some events the semi-finals were entered. The titles in all events will be decided at Maori Park to-day and there should be some keenly-fought matches. There were one or two surprises on Saturday. The Misses H. and S. Elsom were beaten in the semi-final of the championship doubles by the Misses T. Poole and A. Mercer. The Misses Elsom, who took the first set 9-7 after a keen struggle, but dropped the second 6-3, looked all over winners, but Misses Poole and Mercer, after trailing 1-3, fought back and made the score 4-4 before taking the next two games for the set and match, 6-4. In the closing stages Miss Poole made some timely interceptions at the net and was ably supported by her partner. The Misses Elsom went down fighting, however, Miss S. Elsom especially, who is not yet 16 years, playing a steady and heady game throughout. In the semi-final of the men’s championship doubles J. Bushel! and N. Taylor, the Christchurch youngsters, eliminated P. Durning and J. S. Satterthwaite. Another bright match was in the open singles between J. Bushell and A. Elsom, who met in the second round. After two well-contested-sets, in which fortunes fluctuated, Bushell proved the steadier at the critical moment. Elsom was erratic in the closing stages of each set, but if he does not lapse as easily he 'might turn the tables on Bushell in the final of the boys’ singles to-day. W. A. Lewis and T. A. McDonnell provided a marathon in the men’s championship singles. Play began at 9.30 a.m. and they battled on until midday. Lewis finally succeeded, but it was either’s game until the last as the result indicates, Lewis losing the first set 6-8 and taking the next two 8- 8-6. There should be attractive play in the finals of the girls’ and boys’ championship singles. In the boys’ final J. Bushell and A. G. Elsom will meet, and in the girls’ title game M. Adam, the South Canterbury junior champion, will play S. Elsom. Results:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS Men’s Singles First round: W. A. Lewis v. T. A. McDonnell, 6-8, 8-6, 8-6. Second round: P. Durning v. D.
