FIRST INNINGS WIN Otago Defeats Canterbury (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN. Jan. 3. Otago defeated Canterbury by nine runs on the first innings. In reply to Otago’s 223, Canterbury made 214. Otago compiled 188 in the second innings (Toomey 53, Mills 33, Muluock three wickets for 26 runs and Burt five for 67), and Canterbury was left with 198 to get for an outright win in just on three hours. A fine partnership by Cromb (39) and Hadlee (65) retrieved the situation after four wickets had fallen for 23. The rate of scoring was not sufficient to get the required runs, and at stumps the total was 173 for seven wickets. A feature of the Otago attack was the veteran Allcott’s bowling unchanged for 165 minutes, taking four wickets for 56 runs off 20 overs and keeping all the batsmen quiet.
