FAIRLIE YOUNG FARMERS MEET

Club To Carry On Interesting Debates Mr A. Whatman presided at the monthly meeting of the Young Farmers’ Club held at Ashwick Flat. A letter was read from the Dominion president, Mr D. C. Ross, urging members to be more determined than ever to carry on with club activities. A canvass is to be made in an effort to increase membership. A number of impromptu speeches were given and enjoyed. One In which the speaker spoke of ‘ What we will do with Hitler after the War” caused much amusement. ST. STEPHEN’S CHURCH There was an attendance of 21 parishioners at the annual meeting of the Parochial District of Fairlie held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday. The Rev. D. M. Taylor presided. The annual report, which had been circulated, was read and adopted. The Church Wardens’ report and the Women’s Guild report were also adopted. The chairman stated that there were 130 subscribers to the annual appeal, a larger number than at any time for at least six years. However, the Parish had lost many excellent workers during the year. Of the vestrymen appointed 12 months ago, two (Messrs L. Carlton and V. Braddick) were now in the Army, and Mr E. H. Lee also would shortly be going into camp. Messrs C. H. Miller and J. E. Shears had left the district. The Parish had suffered a great loss in the death ow the People’s Warden (Mr C. J. Talbot). The following motion was unanimously carried: —“That this annual meeting of the parishioners of the Parochial District of Fairlie place on record its gratitude to God for the life and work of Mr C. J. Talbot, and convey to the relatives the sincere sympathy of all.” In explaining the balance-sheet the treasurer (Mr H. T. Foden) said the credit balance in the general account was £46/18/10. This would be much more than offset by the present liabilities of the church. Receipts for missions were much below the quota of £43. In the repairs and renovations fund the credit balance of £46/9/8 was still short by £4O, which was required to complete payment for the sewerage installation at the Parish Hall. While some parishioners, said Mr Foden, had been very generous in their response to the annual appeal, there was still quite a number who had not yet responded to the call of the church for financial help. Compared with last year subscriptions were down £lO. While the general offertories showed a decline of £ll/10/3 for the same period. The election of officers for the coming year resulted:—Vicar’s Warden, Mr E. Goodwin; People’s Warden, Mr H. Foden; Vestrymen. Messrs J. Braddick. H. Bateman. W. Liddy, A. H. Gillingham. G. Driver, R. Feilden, J. C. Voight, A. Wheeler, B. Slow and S. Braddick. A letter was read from the Rev. Canon H. O. T. Hanby, expressing his sympathy with the workers of St. Stephen’s Church, in the loss of their Warden, Mr C. J. Talbot, and recalling the happy relations that existed between himself (when Vicar during the last war) and Mr Talbot.

A discussion took place regarding the hour of Sunday services during the blackout. A large majority were in favour of holding Evensong at 3.30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. during the winter, months. It was left to the Vicar to draw up a rota of services in the various districts of the Parish, no change to take place until all parishioners were notified by circular. The following social committee was elected:— Mesdames S. Braddick. H. Foden, T. Wilson, M. Hannigan, J. Bain, W. Bourne, H. Carlton and Miss E. Braddick. The Vicar and Mr Jas. Braddick both spoke with gratitude of the many services rendered by Mr E. H. Lee. and a motion of thanks to him was carried by acclamation.

Meeting of Vestry At a meeting of the newly-elected Vestry, the following were appointed as a works sub-committee to deal with necessary repairs to the church buildings:—Messrs H. Foden (convener), J. Braddick. H. Bateman, and B. Slow. Mr Foden agreed to continue as acting-treasurer, and Mr R. G. Feilden was elected secretary. A resolution was carried forbidding the lending or hiring of any of the furniture of the Parish Hall for use outside of the Hall.
