RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, April 21. Gillie provided the chief interest this morning, when C. H. Mackie rode him over the pony hurdles. He resumed work recently after being off the scene for metre than three years, owing to a mishap. He was a clever jumper then and he has not forgotten the art, as he flew the obstacles in great style this morning. Gillie is a seven-year-old half-brother, by Lord Warden, to

Palfrey, and with plenty of speed he should pay his way as a jumper. A. McAulay has brought Sir Gundi in after a short rest. He has been troubled with muscle soreness in the shoulders, but he las been improved by the spell. Rain will be welcomed to soften the trades for him. His stable-mate, Stabilise, will also benefit by winter conditions. He has not raced well lately, though he has done some great gallops on the plough, and all his best race form has been shown on easy tracks.

King’s Toast was operated on at the end of last week for wind trouble. He will have a short spell before C. G. Humnhries puts him in work again. R. Pentecost has turned Ryetown out and he will be used only as a hack in future. Though a good gaalloper on the tracks, he disappointed In his races. Jolly Time is resting for a few weeks, hut she will be in work again soon. In the meantime, the two-year-old. Jolly Tinker, is the only active member of the team. She may be given some racing before the season ends. D. A. Withers has experienced some bad luck with Rhodlim, just when he looked on the way to good form. He ricked a shoulder a few weeks ago and a recurrence of the trouble last week has lengthened his spell. A well-grown yearling filly, owned by Mr E. Steele, of North Otago, has been broken in by F. A. Roberts. She is by Defoe from the Imported mare, Doretta, dam of Portadown, and she looks a good sort.
