Axis Agents Rounded Up
(10.52 p.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, April 20. The police rounded up 36 Germans in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Including Kurt Fraeb, a former German Army officer described as the director of German espionage at the port of Rio Grande.
The police declared that Fraeb operated a radio aboard German freighters to the harbour ’ which informed the battleship Graf Spee of the movements of British vessels. Apparently the espionage backfired leading to the final destruction of the Graf Spee in Monte Video harbour in December, 1939, after British warships had apprehended the raider.
