COPPER ORE
Central Hawke’s Bay Deposit
NAPIER. April 21. An assay of 9.16 per cent, metal content was shown in a sample of copper ore found in the Makaretu district and sent to Wellington by the Central Hawke’s Bay Secondary Industries Committee for analysis. The committee is asking for a geologist from the Geological Survey Office <X) visit the district to find if copper is there in sufficient quantities to make mining payable.
“Copper Ridge,” near Makaretu, has always been well known t© residents in that district, and there has always been speculation concerning the location of the mother lode. Interest was renewed when last year s flood in the Tuki Tuki river deposited a piece of quartz weighing 21-lb m the State forest reserve, suggesting that the main copper deposit might be somewhere along the upper reaches of the river toward the mountains. This is the piece of quartz that was assayed, and its high content of copper has raised hopes. The possibilities of a large workable deposit will be thoroughly investigated m the near future.
