MORE SHIPS NEEDED
(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Mar. 5. Read-Admiral Vickers (vice-chair-man of the Maritime Commission) disclosed that the Government has outlined instructions for the scuttling of merchantmen quickly and effectively in order to withhold valuable cargoes from the enemy. Rear-Admiral Vickers added that the number of ships turned out from American shipyards was still unsatisfactory. “Unless we bring new life into the shipyards I cannot see where we are going to get the necessary ships,” he added.
