RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

A Budget Of News And Views nx’t iii:es> Racing Jan. 31—Auckland R.C. Jan. 31-Ashhuitt-Pohangina R.C. Feb. 7—Canterbury J.q. Feb. 7, 14—Egmont R.C. . Feb. 7—Matamata R.C. Feb. 7—Winton J.c. Feb. 14—Rotorua J.C. Feb. 14—Gore R.C. Feb. 21—Waikato R.C. Feb. 21, 28—Dunedin J.C. Ironing Feb. 7—'Wellington T.C. Feo. 14—Camel oui-y r-arK T.C. Feb. 14. 18—Auckland T.C. Feb. 21—New Brighton T.C Takapuna Cup to-day. The Amberley Racing Club has decided to abandon its meeting in May. W. J. Broughton, who was suspended in Octobei- tor three months, will be riding at Ashhurst this afternoon. Floodtide, once one of Auckland’s best handicap .performers, is on the minimum in the Takapuna Cup. Dinah Dhu will not be eligible for hack races after the C.J.C. meeting next week. .The Hon. E. Dye. M.L.C., who died in Auckland a day or two ago, was the father of the successful apprentice jockey E. C. Dye. Ever England, whose vagaries at the barrier have carried him a recommendation for the schooling list, is to be tried over hurdles. Last month Miss Hua won two races in Sydney for Bing Crosby, and now another absentee owner, movie magnate L. B. Mayer, has been credited with a win by Hugette. Mr Mayer is the American owner of Beau Pere. Every horse in the Novice Stakes at Ashhurst will be bracketed with some other runner. The totalisator provides for 20 horses, and there are 40 acceptors on the card. The New Zealander Turncoat won a hurdle race at Moonee Valley last week. He was on his nose at one jump, where his rider lost both reins, but recovered and scored easly. The C.J.C. Easter Meeting will be confined to one day, either Easter Monday or the following Saturday. The other permit can be utilised for a meeting on May 2, the date vacated by the Amberley Club.

The big Beau Pere horse Kinsman failed to win a race for Mr H. D. Greenwood, who paid 800 guineas for him at the yearling sates three years ago and quitted him last week at 190 guineas. The fields at Ashhurst promise to be so big that it is unfortunate that totalisator facilities do not permit of the win and place system being used. In division races under the 75—25 method, only one dividend can be paid on each division. Cambria, whose last six starts have yielded a first, three seconds and a third, is galloping brilliantly at Takanini, and he will be a fancied candidate in the sprint at Ellerslie today. Foxbla has been in a place nine times in ten starts this season, and at her last appearance finished third with 8.8 in the Nathan Memorial at Ellerslie. She is in the Takapuna Cup with 8.5, and her admirers are rather optimistic. “The Tinmne Punter,” a spectacular cash bettor at Sydney meetings, landed a big coup on Freckles at Moorefield. He was in Melbourne at the Time, but telephoned instructions to an agent, who collected £5200 in cash and tool: one credit hit of £l2OO to £2OO. Hearth. Wild Talk, Salutation, Not Out, Night Pal, Wild Fox, Military Maid, Eulogist, Arctic Dawn, and Palfrey have been weighted for both the Midsummer Handicap and the Craven Plate at the C.J.C. summer meeting. Arctic Dawn is in the Highweight Handicap also. At present the Canterbury Jockey Club has the option of using the Motukarara or New Brighton courses. These tracks would not be suitable for a steeplechase meeting, and the fate of the Grand National fixture is uncertain. If Riccarton is not available in August, the only alternative to abandonment seems to be to apply for a transfer to Washdyke. The safety number at the six furlongs barrier at Ashhurst is 17, and if there are more than 34 starters (there are 40 acceptors) in the Novice Plate, three divisions will be required. There are likely to be divisions in the Hack Cup, and the Siberia Handicap also. In a fourth race, the Komaka Handicap, the acceptors number five more than the safety figure, but the requisite scratchings are expected. Autumn campaigns for Regal Fox and Battledress were fixed in Wellington where the owners, Messrs Cleary and A. Mack, met after the Wellington meeting. They are close friends and are the fortunate owners of two good three-year-olds. Battledress was . not engaged in the New Zealand St. Leger to be rim at Trentham in March so all going well with Regal F >x in the meantime he is booked to compete for the St. Leger Stakes and the North Island Challenge Stakes at Trentham. Battledress is engaged in the Great Northern St. Leger at the Ellerslie Easter meeting and that will be his Easter mission.
